This past Sunday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hosted their annual dinner and awards ceremony, the Golden Globes. This yearly celebration of excellence in entertainment began in 1944 when the Association was still called the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association. Originally a fairly informal event, the event quickly went from a short awards ceremony to a full-blown gala featuring fashion-forward ballgowns and statuettes to give to winners.
Today, the association awards upwards of 20 awards to directors, actors, actresses, screenplay writers, musicians, and animators whose work in either movies or television shows was considered exemplary and ground-breaking.
As the Golden Globes has attracted more and more attention, TV coverage and social media hashtags have gravitated towards attendees’ wardrobes and accessories, all competing for unofficial “best dressed” titles from fans and magazines. This year, the show of diamonds sported by the attendees, including some nominees and award winners, went unparalleled. Here’s a short review of the best in diamonds.
Tracee Ellis Ross: The first black woman to win in her category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series in 35 years, Tracee Ellis Ross appeared on the red carpet with multiple rings on each finger, all dazzling diamonds. Her “gladiator” style rings on all knuckles featured such designers as Noudar, L’Dezen by Payal Shah, Hueb, Yeprem and Kavant & Sharart.
Drew Barrymore: A 2009 recipient of a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for her work in Grey Gardens, Drew Barrymore appeared at the awards ceremony in diamonds galore — seven to be exact, from Harry Winston. In addition, her fingers sported a south sea pearl coming in at 37.03 carats surrounded by diamonds, as well as an emerald-cut diamond bank in platinum coming in at 11.51 carats. All totaled, her jewelry for the night was worth a grand $2.5 million.
Kerry Washington: Adorned in a golden gown, Washington, nominee for Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie for her work in Confirmation, was scintillating head to toe. In addition to her golden gown and rhinestone-heeled shoes, Washington sported a hefty diamond ring and eye-catching earrings to compliment the first dress she’s worn since she’s given birth.
Natalie Portman: Portman was nominated this year for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama Movie for her work in Jackie, and she didn’t let her pregnancy stop her shine. Appearing in a very 60s inspired maternity ball gown, Portman accessorized with more than $200K worth of precious gems from Tiffany & Co. Just one ring along bears a hundred-thousand dollar price tag.
: The woman who can truly play anything walked away from the Golden Globes this year with a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her work in Florence Foster Jenkins and the much coveted Cecil B. DeMille Award. Streep sported earrings with radiant-cut yellow diamonds by Harry Winston coming in at 13.62 carats.
